This man pulled a gun on me.

Hans Jute listened quietly to the summary of results the so-called Grupo Especial had obtained in London. In a superficial way, it was somewhat impressive. In a deeper way, it was appalling.

The report was being given by an Interpol liaison to the London Metropolitan Police. Hans had already forgotten her name, and he couldn’t be bothered to look at her square on the screen to refresh his memory.

There were more than two dozen people on this call, but the only one Hans seemed able to focus on was Miquel Castro-Ruiz. His face was in the top right-hand corner of Hans’s monitor. He was clean shaven, looked like he had lost a few pounds, and was wearing a smart blue dress shirt. When Hans knew him in The Hague, Castro almost always presented as disheveled and distracted. But now he was riding high, or at least he thought he was.

“The surviving kidnapper is still in the hospital, with a twenty-four-hour police presence at his bedside,” the liaison said. “He was interviewed through the night by interrogators from both the FBI and Scotland Yard. He is a twenty-seven-year-old male who says his name is Agim Jankovic. He claims to be from Montenegro, and of partial Albanian descent. There are records of such a person existing, and we are awaiting confirmation that this is the same man. He has no documentation proving this. Five years ago, there was a male model who worked throughout the Balkans named Agim Jankovic, who appears nearly identical to the suspect. The suspect claims he was forced into his role as a kidnapper because of financial debts he owed to Albanian mafias.”

There was a pause as the woman scrolled through information in front of her.

“There is no one named Agim Jankovic in any charts we have of the Albanian crime organizations,” a male voice said. “He may be telling the truth.”

Hans glanced at the person who had spoken. Some analyst based here in Lyon.

“Give her a moment,” someone else said.

The liaison spoke again. “He further claims that he doesn’t know what became of the women he helped kidnap, except that they were sent out of Great Britain. He believes they may have been sent to Albania, as a transshipment point, to then be sent elsewhere. He insists that none of the women were killed or harmed in his presence, and that no women will be found, either alive or dead, in the reservoir tunnels beneath Finsbury Park. The kidnappers merely used those tunnels on a few occasions as a way to isolate and capture victims.”

She scrolled again. Her audience waited patiently this time.

“Jankovic’s story, if this really is Jankovic, is partially corroborated by another man who was captured at the flat in Battersea. He is thirty-eight-year-old Gjon Baruti. Baruti is a full member of the Baruti mafia, and in fact is a second cousin of the gang’s founder. He has a long history with the organization, which you can all access for yourselves.
